Outlander QOTW: No, It’s Not About Sex

qotw 21

It’s Sunday, time for the Question of the Week. I know that you thought I was gonna ask about a trip downtown, but.. I’m not. Oh, try not to look so disappointed.

Today I want to talk about anger. Claire gets angry a lot in 1×10 By The Pricking Of My Thumb.

slap

She’s angry at Laoghaire (or as I lovingly call her, LegWhore), she’s angry at The Duke of Sandringham, and I think she’s a little peeved at Colum for sending her alarm clock away.  She’s also angry about the senseless death of a baby, a baby she may have been able to help were it not for all the superstition swirling around the Scottish Highlands.

So I’d like to talk about your anger. Not necessarily the things that you choose to get angry about, but more the way you express your anger.

Me, I cry and throw things. I also slam doors .. I broke one once. My dad made me pay for it, and I didn’t get an allowance for 6 months. But, mostly I cry. The kind of crying that gives you a headache and makes your nose red. I’m 50 years old and the way I process anger hasn’t changed since I was 2.

So, what about you?  Are you the sew ’em up and keep your opinions to yourself type? Or are you more the banish them from the castle type?

  1. Overall, I’m a keep-my-opinions-to-myself introverted type. (Sounds silly, but that’s why I love Pinterest so much. I can express myself simply by pinning things to my “Common Sense and My Beliefs” folder. It’s refreshing to be able to do that). I can think of one person that tells me I shouldn’t keep everything bottled up, yet on the extremely rare occasion that I actually DO open up to them…. I’m told I’m being “negative.” Or I’ll see their hand go up while hearing a straightforward “I don’t want to hear it. You’re being negative.” (Even though they complain to me about people all the time, and I just have to listen). So if it’s an emotion that isn’t positive, I bury it. It’s the only way I’ve found to live in peace with this person. I hate conflict… I don’t do well with conflict and dread the thought of hurting other people’s feelings (unless they’re truly being a jerk)… so it takes A LOT to make me burst out in anger. But when I do…. it’s best if everyone just leave the country. Lol!

Now, if it’s something minor that bothers or angers me… something I read online, or even a tv episode… I’ll write about it in my blog. I’m not sure I would do that if a lot of people actually read my blog, but that anonymity does make it feel safer. It’s a healthy release, really.

I’m the opposite. If I’m annoyed you’ll know it, and u freely share my opinion on things I think are wrong or dumb. LOL. So when I am actually, truly angry about something I become deadly quiet. My entire body becomes still as I wait to see what my next action will need to be. What ever it is, I will do it calmly and methodically.

I am a shut up and deal with it for a long time. Eventually I explode like a volcano and then it’s all gone – forgive and forget. Very few people have seen me explode and I intend to keep it that way.

If I cannot act on my anger it turns into depression — anger turned inward. Healthy? Nope.

I use to break things and throw things , scream or holler until I was in my late 20s early 30s. Then I would verbally express it but usually to wrong person, kids mostly. But then learned to control it and did good for 10 to 15 yrs.. now I hold it in, cry alot, ..

Unfortunately for whom ever is the bad guy, I hold back until I’m ready to blow. Watch out! Probably not good for my health but am not fond of confrontation.

I am a screamer and door slammer. Like you, I also broke one. But it feels good to let it out…at least to me.
