Sam Heughan and the NY Times Interview

Sam Heughan gave a recent interview with New York Times writer Bruce Fretts via the phone from Scotland. He always gives a great interview and is very honest in his answers.

If I would not be so nervous, I would love to interview him and the rest of the cast. I would have to think of different questions to ask so as not to bore them Here I am, digressing. I will post just a few highlights so you DREAMERS can enjoy the article for yourself.

“My journey and Jamie’s journey have been very similar,” he told Bruce Fretts. “He’s coming back to Scotland after he’s been abroad fighting wars. He’s got a lot of old ghosts, and I feel that’s my case as well.”-Sam

Q. What’s the biggest misconception about Scotland?

A. We’ve got this image, and we secretly quite like it, of whisky swilling and haggis eating. But we try to be as authentic as possible on the show, so we looked at what a kilt really was — the colors and the clan culture. Hopefully, the show will go some way to make people realize Scotland has a bit more going for it than deep-fried Mars bars. Which are pretty good, by the way.

Are you getting tired of people asking you what you wear under your kilt?

No, you can never get tired of it. But they’re going to get the same response. Maybe I should wear something different under there, tartan pants to scare them all.

Starz is famous for sex scenes on shows like “Spartacus.” Did you have any hesitation to appear nude?

I would be lying if I said Starz doesn’t have a reputation. We don’t shy away from sex, but certainly with this series, it’s not gratuitous. It’s in the books.

You’re often filthy on the show. Is that real dirt or makeup?

It’s probably a bit of both. It definitely adds an authenticity. These Highlanders lived and breathed in the mud. I’m sure they probably did smell pretty bad. Apart from Jamie, of course.

The writers on the “Outlander” set call you “the king of men” because they think you’re so perfect. How do you feel about that?

Do they? Wow. Well, I’ve got them all fooled. But I’m sure my secret will be found out soon enough.

I wouldn’t mind taking him home… to personally find out what’s really under that kilt. Whew. And deep-fried Mars bars sound good right about now.

Nice interview, and picture too! It’s weird to see Sam all cleaned up after I’m used to the scruffy version. Think I prefer him scruffy, although both are pleasing to the eye! 🙂 And on a side note, I thought deep-fried candy bars were an American thing…I had no idea such things are in Scotland. Guess maybe that shows I’m one of those people who have a “traditional” view of Scotland?!

If it is an American things, this American never heard of it. I had to learn of it from a Scotsman!

Well the fried candy bars are quite known here in Ohio, especially at events like the Ohio State Fair. Also deep-fried Oreos, twinkies, buckeyes (chocolate/pb candy), even bacon! I tried the Twinkie once and that’s enough for me! But I digress. Can’t wait for the new episode tonight!

I heard that in Texas they have deep-fried butter at the fairs! I love butter and use it for lots and lots of stuff but not deep-fried! I think I just heard my arteries clogging…
